Sikkim a KALEIDOSCOPE of Contrasts
A serpentine trail tunnels dense tropical forests emblazoned with orchids,
Bamboo and tree fern shelter the mongoose and jungle cats. Above vivid birds
sing amongst clouds of gorgeous butterflies.
Now roads wind by a fast flowing river , rises through terraced paddies dotted
with farmers and climbs through small villages to forests of oak and cherry,
chestnut and maple. Here are bear and squirrel and the arboreal red panda,
Kingfisher, fairy blue bird and emerald dove compliment the brilliant flowers
and from every ridge of snowy peaks delight the eye.
Up up up- past the ruins of ancient towns, below monasteries tended by red robed
lamas, circling crystalline sacred lakes .Up to the high hills covered in
blooming rhododendrons, past streaming hot springs and beyond to alpine meadows
carpeted with tint colourful flowers. Here is the full glory of Kanchendzonga
and her attendant peaks dwarf the grazing yaks.
